LESSON 11

PERSONAL PROTECTION AND DATA PROTECTION →Hello again!!! in today's class we have learned about personal data protection. Next we will talk about information that we all need to know when using devices. Nowadays we use technologies and devices for everything, that's why we should know that we are exposed to have our accounts hacked. We have to be careful when putting passwords or user numbers on pages that are not very secure.  Installing things like Antivirus or Malware Detection Tool will allow us to stay away from this type of hackers. Since there are malicious programs that seek to obtain personal data and money. It is also advisable to renew passwords from time to time and not to use the same password for all accounts. In addition to this, it is also advisable to use secure passwords, which are those that contain a combination of uppercase and lowercase letters, as well as numbers.  Another thing we can do to avoid obtaining our data is to delete cookies, because every time

LESSON 1

NAVIGATION AND SEARCH

→ In our first class we saw the differences between Web Browsers (the most common are Chrome, Internet Explorer or Safari) and Search Engines (most notably Google, Yahoo or Bing). A Browser is a software program that is installed on a cell phone, a computer, or any other electronic device on which the Internet can be easily accessed. On the other hand, a Search Engine is also a program, but with the difference that it can search for the keyword entered and obtain matches.

We also saw how to maintain privacy while surfing the Internet. Web Browsers offer an incognito tab, this allows you to search for things easily and they will not be recorded in the search history. On the other hand, Search Engines allows you to modify your personal and private data, such as removing the location.

On the other hand, we saw tips to search in Search Engines and thus make our search more accurate. This bar allows us to select photos, videos and even books of the information we are looking for. For example, if we are looking for a news from 1 month ago, we can select the ALL button to set the date of the news we are interested in:

The function of  "I'm feeling lucky" button is to skip the search results page, what it does is that it goes directly to the first ranked page for the search phrase you entered.

In order to make a more precise search we can use these examples:

  • (word) AND (word): to find all web sites that have both words
  • (word) OR (word): to find all web sites that have at least one of the words
  • "(word)": to find the word or phrase as we type it in the search engine
  • -(word): if we don't want a particular word to be displayed

If we want to see results that contain specific documents such as pdfs, we will type filetype:(pdf,doc,docx.swf.tif.mp3,avi).

In addition we saw the fake news (which are very present nowadays) and the ways to identify them. There are bookstores and content storage where references to physical books are published and you can even read e-books.

Finally we learned how to use bookmarcks (it is a method to save the address of a web page). You can save them in a web browser or if you prefer, you can use an external platform to share them with more people. Examples of Social Bookmarks: Diigo, Pocket, Reddit.

We created a Diigo account to be able to share web pages with our group and complete the work.
